Coriandrum sativum
Annual ~ Height 60cm ~ Hardy
An extremely attractive, erect herb with aromatic leaves and white to purple flowers in summer. The flowers are followed by pale brown fruits which have a fruity scent when ripe. The leaves have their best flavour before flowering and are used in Middle Eastern and Indian cuisine. Dried seeds can be used in sweet dishes, breads, cakes, curries, chutneys and pickles and crushed seeds can be added to pot pourri.
Coriander is attractive to hoverflies and drone flies.
Likes well drained, fertile soil in a sunny position. Dislikes being transplanted. Keep watered to prevent prematurely running to seed.
