Origanum onites
Perennial ~ Height 45-60cm ~ Hardy
Pot marjoram has oval, dark green, aromatic leaves with clusters of white, sometimes pink, flowers in mid summer.
It can be used as a substitute for golden marjoram although it has an inferior flavour. In addition, dried leaves and flowers can be added to pot pourri.
The flowers are attractive to bees and butterflies and the seeds provide a good source of food for seed eating birds.
Prefers light, well drained soil in a sunny position. Pot Marjoram is less likely to scorch in full sun than golden marjoram. Dislikes being water logged in winter.
